History
Yibin has a long history. 40,000 years ago, humans had been living in Yibin City. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it was a habitat where Bo people lived. It was known as "Ancient Bo State" and "Bo Hou State" in historical records. In the late Warring States period, the current city was included in Qinzhiba and Shu counties. During Li Bing’s term as the magistrate in Shu, the first county-level administrative district was established- Bodao. Bodao City was built in the sixth year of Gaohou in the Western Han Dynasty (182 BC), more than 2,200 years ago. In the sixth year of Jianyuan (135 BC), Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty established Qianwei County. In the tenth year of Datong (544), Emperor Wu of Liang established Rongzhou. In the sixth year of Zhenguan (632), Tang dynasty, Rongzhou Dudufu was established. In addition to directly governing Rongzhou and Bodao and other 5 counties, it also governed 64 Jimi prefectures, which spanned Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou, and was known as "half of the southwest". In the first year of Tang Tianbao (742), the county under the jurisdiction of Rongzhou changed its name to YÌbin County. In the first year of Song Taiping Xingguo (976), to avoid Taizong Zhao Guangyi's taboo, Yibin County was changed to Yíbin County, which is the beginning of Yibin's name. In the fourth year of Song Xining (1071), Yibin County was reduced to a town and merged into Bodao County. In the fourth year of Zhenghe (1114), Rongzhou was renamed Xuzhou, and Bodao County was renamed Yibin County. In 1935, the Sixth Administrative Inspectorate was established. After Yibin’s peaceful liberation in December 1949, Yibin Special Area and Yibin Area were set up successively. On October 5, 1996, the State Council approved the abolition of Yibin area and the establishment of prefecture-level Yibin city.

The Yangtze River, Jinsha River, and Minjiang River in the territory are all officially planned national high-level waterways.
Environment
Located in the south of the Sichuan Basin in the mid-latitudes of East Asia, Yibin belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate zone. The shallow hills and valleys have both southern subtropical climate attributes, and the southern mountainous area has an obvious three-dimensional climate. The overall characteristics are mild climate, abundant rainfall, long frost-free period, rain and heat in the same season, and four distinct seasons. The characteristics of each season are early warming in spring, frequently affected by cold wave; high temperature and humidity during summer, concentrated rainfall; late autumn, rapid cooling, and continuous rain; mild climate during winter with little frost and snow; autumn and winter with more clouds and fog. Compared with the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River of the same latitude, the distribution of four seasons in Yibin can be characterized as early spring, long summer, late autumn, and short winter.
